Misadventures, when it comes to travel, might be as common as cracks in the sidewalks. We’ve all had them, seen them, stepped in it. But what you might not know is what some of the most common misadventures in travel are and, well, how common they are.

According to a recent YouGov survey conducted by Visit Sweden, 8% of the respondents admitted to ending up in the wrong destination while traveling. Out of 80 million travelers identified as “dreaming of visiting Sweden,” nearly 8 million might accidentally find themselves in a different Sweden—not the original one or the one they thought they would be visiting.

Misadventure Mania: When Travel Plans Take a Detour:

Kiruna… with and without Gorillas
One traveler dreaming of Lapland’s snowy northern lights ended up in tropical Kiruna, Uganda, trading reindeer for savannahs.

Venice Dreaming
Hoping for gondolas in Venice, a couple from Asia went by train to Vännäs, near Umeå, Sweden. Instead of canals, they luckily found a helpful local to steer them right. On their return, they said: “We loved every minute of it. We have never seen so much snow before. Umeå was better than Venice. We received an incredible welcome.”

Uppsala or Hoopsala?
A mix-up almost sent a friend to Upsala, USA, instead of Sweden’s historic university city. Luckily, the Viking-less detour was avoided just in time.

Kil, Not Kiel
A rail passenger bound for Kiel, Germany, ended up in Kil, Sweden—charming but with fewer maritime vibes.

Although these stories of travel misadventures may not involve festive airport dashes or forgotten family members, they’re a gentle reminder that even Santa must check his route twice.

To help avoid future travel mishaps, Sweden has, as the first country in the world applied to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to trademark Sweden as a destination.

The mix-ups highlight the need to distinguish the original Sweden. Travelers who already signed an online petition to support the trademark application were asked if they felt any other original Swedish treasures should be trademarked. Their suggestions were illuminating: fika (the cherished coffee break), cinnamon buns (arguably Sweden’s sweetest treat), friluftsliv (embracing nature like a true Swede), and midsommar (flower crowns are a must).

Misadventures: When Travel Goes Very Wrong

While wanderlust burns bright for 2025, with adventure travel topping many bucket lists, a new survey by World Nomads reveals a growing anxiety among travelers with what can go wrong.

The travel insurance company conducted in late 2024 and found that thrill-seeking is on the rise. Solo expeditions, mountain escapes, and activities like hiking and trekking are all the rage. But with these intrepid pursuits come a heightened awareness of potential pitfalls and misadventures.

The Top Travel Misadventure Fears

The survey highlighted some common anxieties:

+ Medical Mayhem: A whopping 32% of respondents cited getting sick or injured as their top concern. This fear is not unfounded. Foreign environments can expose travelers to unfamiliar pathogens, while adventurous activities carry inherent risks of injury. From a simple stomach bug to altitude sickness in the Himalayas or a broken leg on a remote hiking trail, medical emergencies abroad can be daunting and expensive.

+ Baggage Blunders: Losing luggage or personal belongings was a close second, worrying 18% of those surveyed. Imagine arriving in a foreign country without your essentials, or worse, having your passport and valuables stolen. Pickpockets in crowded tourist spots, baggage mishandling by airlines, and even opportunistic thieves in hotels all contribute to this risk.

+ Vehicular Mishaps: While not as prevalent a concern in the survey, accidents in rental cars are a significant source of claims for World Nomads. Driving on the “wrong” side of the road in countries like Australia and New Zealand, navigating treacherous mountain passes in Norway, or simply adjusting to unfamiliar traffic patterns can lead to fender benders, or worse.

Misadventures in Travel and Where to Have Them

Drawing from its claims data, World Nomads looked at not only what can happen but where these misadventures tend to happen most while people are traveling.

+ Lost Luggage Hotspots: Switzerland, Mexico, France, Italy, and the U.S. top the list for lost luggage claims. Factors like busy airports, complex baggage handling systems and theft contribute to this problem.

+ Baggage Theft Blindspots: Spain, Italy, and Mexico are flagged as high-risk areas for stolen bags, with large crowds and cunning pickpockets preying on distracted tourists.

+ Accident-Prone Drive Spots: Norway, Peru, and France, with their scenic yet challenging roads, see a high rate of vehicular accident claims.

+ Medical Emergency Risk Spots: Italy, Spain, and Tanzania have the highest percentage of claims for medical sickness, while Thailand and Indonesia lead in medical accidents and injuries, often linked to motorcycle accidents.

Misadventure Minimization

While travel mishaps are sometimes unavoidable, travelers can take steps to mitigate their impact:

+ Pack Smart: Carry essential medications, valuables, and important documents in your carry-on luggage. Use luggage trackers and sturdy locks.

+ Research and Prepare: Familiarize yourself with local laws, customs, and potential health risks at your destination.

+ Stay Vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and take precautions to protect your belongings.

+ Exercise Caution: Whether hiking, driving, or participating in adventurous activities, prioritize safety and follow local guidelines.

+ Invest in Comprehensive Travel Insurance: A good policy will cover medical expenses, lost or stolen belongings, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events.
