As Air Traveler Comforts, air travelers are increasingly viewing in-flight connectivity not as a luxury, but as a necessity. A recent survey by Viasat, Inc., a leading satellite communications company, reveals that the availability and quality of in-flight Wi-Fi are becoming crucial factors in airline selection and air traveler loyalty.  

The 2024 Passenger Experience Survey, which gathered insights from over 11,000 air travelers worldwide, paints a picture of a future where connectivity is king.  

A staggering 75% of respondents indicated they would be more likely to choose or rebook with an airline offering high-quality in-flight Wi-Fi.  Even more telling, 22% of air travelers stated they wouldn’t even consider a long-haul flight without connectivity options.

“This report is a glimpse into the future of connected air travel, where low cost, high quality connectivity is increasingly non-negotiable,” says Don Buchman, Vice President & General Manager, Commercial Aviation at Viasat. 

However, the survey also highlights that merely offering Wi-Fi is no longer sufficient. Passengers are demanding more in terms of both cost and quality. The desire for free or low-cost Wi-Fi ranked high among 36% of respondents. Interestingly, 87% of passengers expressed willingness to watch advertisements in exchange for free Wi-Fi access, with 47% viewing this as a fair trade-off.

Beyond basic internet access, the survey reveals a growing demand for personalized entertainment options. A significant 71% of air travelers expressed interest in accessing their own streaming platforms during flights. Specifically, 41% believed that access to services like Netflix would enhance their in-flight experience, while 33% desired the ability to listen to music streaming platforms such as Spotify.

The trend towards personalization extends to device usage as well. An overwhelming 94% of passengers want to use their personal devices even when seatback entertainment is provided, indicating a growing preference for ‘dual screening’ during flights. 

Nearly half of the respondents expressed interest in using their devices for web browsing (46%) and social media access (46%), while 29% showed interest in online shopping or accessing work applications.

The survey also explored passengers’ visions for future in-flight experiences. A remarkable 92% of respondents expressed curiosity about potential innovations in air travel. Over half (55%) showed enthusiasm for enhanced entertainment and sensory experiences, including ideas like panoramic windows, mixed reality displays, and immersive VR entertainment systems.

Comfort and wellness services also ranked high on passengers’ wish lists, with 51% expressing interest in features like adaptive seating, health sensors, and in-flight spa or gym areas.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is another area where passengers see potential for improving their travel experience. Respondents showed interest in AI applications for recognizing food and beverage preferences (33%), providing destination itineraries (33%), and optimizing airport transfers (33%).

These findings present both opportunities and challenges for airlines. As passenger expectations soar, airlines must invest in robust satellite connectivity to power these innovations and meet demand. 

“Flying in the near-future will be characterized by unprecedented levels of personalization and choice within a more technologically advanced environment – all of which can only be enabled by highly robust, reliable connectivity,” Buchman noted.

Shelli Brunswick, a futurist and innovation expert, added perspective on the future of in-flight experiences: “The future of the in-flight experience is about crafting adaptable, immersive spaces that transform each journey into a personalized escape. Connectivity is foundational to this; delivering seamless high-speed, stable connections that support passengers’ needs for productivity, entertainment, and real-time engagement.”

Air Traveler History & Industry Trends

The importance of in-flight Wi-Fi isn’t a new phenomenon. As far back as … wait for it! … 2018, industry surveys were highlighting the growing demand for connectivity. A 2018 report by Inmarsat found that 67% of passengers were more likely to rebook with an airline if high-quality Wi-Fi was offered.

The same report ranked in-flight Wi-Fi as the fourth most important factor for passengers when choosing an airline, behind only airline reputation, free checked baggage, and extra legroom.

The Viasat survey suggests that airlines that can deliver high-quality, affordable connectivity and leverage it to provide personalized experiences will have a significant competitive advantage. 

“The airlines that are the first and fastest to embrace this direction of travel are likely to enjoy considerable commercial advantage and customer loyalty as a result,” Buchman emphasized.
