Inaugurated in December 2023 after four years of planning and construction by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, this multibillion-dollar endeavor aims to connect travelers across five states with the hidden gems of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

The Maya Train currently runs an impressive 965 miles with 34 stops through Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco, and Chiapas. Operational from Cancún to Campeche, with an extension to Palenque. The journey takes passengers through a captivating route with stops at Cancún Airport, Leona Vicario, Nuevo Xcán, Valladolid, Chichén-Itzá, Izamal, Tixkokob, Teya Mérida, Umán, Maxcanú, Calkiní, Hecelchakán, Tenabo, San Francisco de Campeche, Escárcega, and finally Palenque.

Maya Train Tickets

As more Alstom Bombardier trains are delivered, ticket purchase periods will be extended. The longest route on the train is just over 400 miles from Cancun Airport to Palenque, a route that takes 11 hours and involves 19 stops. Plans for a direct train and a 6-hour route are in progress. Trains travel at 100 MPH at full tilt.

Ticket prices vary depending on the class of service chosen. In the regular tourist class, a ticket from Cancún Airport to Palenque costs between $51 and $138 in Tourist Class in a 2-2 seat configuration, and Premier Class seats (with a 2-1 seat configuration) run $165 to $220 – one way.

Challenges

Once onboard, the Maya train offers a comfortable onboard experience with landscapes watched through large windows that fill the cars with natural light. The train is equipped with Wi-Fi and outlets for charging devices.

Currently, the operational train service is called Xiinbal, which caters to short trips and features two classes: Tourist and Premier. The Premier class offers a more exclusive experience with a 2-1 seat configuration, while the Tourist class provides a 2-2 seat configuration. For non-citizens of Mexico, only international ticket rates (at the top of the price tier) are available. Food is served in Premier Class. No refunds are allowed (except when the train is canceled) but changes may be requested within 72 hours of the train’s departure. All trains and stations maintain full non-smoking policies.

Despite its promise, tourists have faced challenges in obtaining up-to-date information about the train, including ticket availability, routes, and operational sections. The ticket booking interface on the website, however, works well and fast.

Maya Train Links to Central America
