To start, American Express has recently unveiled its Amex Trendex Millennial and Gen-Z Summer Spotlight Report, providing insights into the desires and spending habits of the younger generations. Based on a survey of U.S. consumers, the report highlights the focus on travel, concerts, and food festivals among millennials and Gen-Zers. As these generations look forward to the summer months, they are prioritizing experiences that bring joy and create lasting memories.

Last year, women played a pivotal role in driving economic growth through their enthusiastic support of national stadium tours by major pop artists. This summer, they are once again fueling demand for live music events and festivals. The Amex Trendex report reveals that 51% of millennial and Gen-Z women respondents have plans to attend music festivals and concerts, eager to witness their favorite artists perform live. Additionally, 43% of these women intend to participate in entertainment experiences to fulfill their personal bucket lists. Notably, 38% of millennial and Gen-Z women respondents planning to travel abroad for a concert or sporting event have set their sights on Europe as the ultimate destination.

When it comes to summer plans, millennials and Gen-Zers prioritize travel as a means of exploration and adventure. The Amex Trendex report indicates that the majority (81%) of these younger respondents have made arrangements for summer travel. What sets their plans apart is their focus on specific activities, such as wellness retreats or entertainment-based trips. A significant 62% of millennials and Gen-Zers are planning vacations to destinations that align with their interests, ensuring they have a memorable experience. Interestingly, 70% of these individuals tend to purchase new clothes or shoes in preparation for their trips, adding an extra touch of excitement to their adventures.

In addition to their love for travel and music, millennials and Gen-Zers have a keen interest in culinary experiences. The Amex Trendex report reveals that nearly half (47%) of these respondents have plans to attend food festivals this summer, eager to indulge in a wide range of delectable offerings. As dining preferences evolve, two-thirds (66%) of millennials and Gen-Zers admit to spending at least $40 per week on takeout, showcasing their appreciation for diverse flavors and convenient dining options. Furthermore, 41% of these respondents enjoy securing hard-to-get reservations simply for the satisfaction of saying they’ve been there, a desire that sets them apart from older generations. It is worth noting that 20% of millennials and Gen-Zers plan to tip more generously this year, reflecting their growing appreciation for excellent service.

The Amex Trendex is an index that tracks consumer sentiments regarding spending, saving, and travel preferences. It provides valuable insights into the attitudes and behaviors of different generations. It is important to note that the survey does not represent Amex customer spending data or trends.

Methodology:

The Amex Trendex Millennial and Gen-Z Summer Spotlight Report was conducted by Morning Consult between May 2nd and May 5th, 2024. The survey included a sample of 2,026 U.S. adults with a household income of $50,000 or more. This sample consisted of 946 millennials and Gen-Zers, 535 Gen Xers, and 508 baby boomers. The gender breakdown encompassed 1,010 women and 1,014 men. All interviews were conducted online, and the results from the full survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

In a similar study StudentUniverse looked at how the younger generations are taking to cruising as a preferred travel means. 

Traditionally associated with families, multigenerational groups, and older adults, the world of cruising is witnessing a significant shift as a new demographic emerges as avid cruise enthusiasts – Gen Z. Recent research reveals that this generation, aged 18-25, is increasingly setting their sights on cruise vacations. With their unique preferences and budget-conscious mindset, cruise lines are adapting to attract this emerging group of young travelers. Let’s delve into the study’s findings and explore the factors driving Gen Z’s interest in cruising.

The study shows that 42.1% of surveyed U.S. adults in the Gen Z age range have already embarked on river or ocean cruises as independent adults. Moreover, over half (51%) of those who have experienced cruising before are inclined to book another voyage, with 39.4% displaying a high likelihood of doing so. In contrast, among potential first-time cruisers, 36.6% expressed interest in booking, with 29.6% indicating a strong inclination.

Student Travel: Budgets in Mind

With a majority of respondents reporting household incomes below $50,000, Gen Z travelers appreciate value and seek budget-friendly options. Moreover, the study reveals that cruise lines can capture their interest by offering exclusive discounts for young adults and students, as indicated by 50.6% of respondents. Additionally, flexible payment plans (49.4%) and discounts on flights to port cities (48.6%) emerged as other effective strategies to attract this demographic.

What do Gen Z Cruisers Want?

Gen Z travelers find several aspects of cruising highly appealing. The foremost factor is value for money, with 57.4% expressing appreciation for the affordability and inclusive nature of cruise packages. Moreover, onboard experiences (51.8%), all-inclusive amenities (51%), and the opportunity to visit multiple destinations (50.6%) play significant roles in attracting this generation to cruises. However, the study found that high costs remain a deterrent, with 60.2% of previous passengers and 75.5% of potential first-timers expressing concerns regarding cruise expenses.

Gen Z Travel: Going Solo

Finally, As solo travel gains popularity among young adults, the study reveals interesting insights about Gen Z’s willingness to embark on solo cruises. Those with prior cruise experience (62.5%) are more inclined to take a solo cruise compared to first-time cruisers (30.8%). While 60.8% of young women stated they would not cruise alone, 61.6% of female past passengers expressed a willingness to do so. Accordingly, These findings suggest that safety concerns may play a role in deterring young women without cruise experience from traveling alone.
