LAX Connects is now a connects airport – from the inside. While in the past, passengers would require to leave the secure area of each terminal and access each terminal separately from the outside – going through the TSA line anew each time – now they can access all eight terminals the easy way.
When Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)’s Terminal 3 and Tom Bradley International Terminal connector recently opened, ticketed passengers began enjoying unimpeded pedestrian access across LAX’s terminals post-security.
The new path of travel equals approximately two pedestrian miles from Terminal 1 to Terminal 8, allowing airport guests to conveniently journey to connecting flights and an abundant collection of offerings including food and beverage vendors, shopping and entertainment experiences, lounges, children’s play areas and pet relief stations, among others.
This transformational moment represents the first time in the airport’s almost century-long history that unrestricted terminal-to-terminal access has been available to users. The airside connectivity made possible through this recent modernization at LAX Connects will bolster further when the Automate People Mover and its corresponding pedestrian bridges open in 2025.
“While we modernize LAX Connects to greatly elevate our guests’ experiences, we are also advancing economic opportunities for the airport’s neighbors and the greater Southern California region,” said BOAC President Karim Webb “The projects that now allow passengers to go between terminals post-security also provides jobs for over 7,000 local workers, equaling over half a billion dollars in wages for these individuals. The roughly 2-mile end-to-end connection from Terminal 1 to Terminal 8 will continue to foster career pathways for our local community by supporting the expansion of operations and concessions roles.”
LAX Connects in Perspective
The airport has handle nearly one billion passenger passes through it in only the last 15 years. That calls for an explosive number of improvements. As an example, expansions requires a new economy parking complex and one that offers 4,300 extra parking places for travelers leaving from LAX Connects was launches by the airport recently. The Automate People Mover (APM) to open next year is in process between the terminals as a way to lessen ground congestion.
The $2 billion APM will transport passengers to the newly construct parking structure, metro connection station, and combined rental car facility by picking them up at three sites in the middle of the outer terminals. The APM will run on a variable timetable for the whole day, with trains departing every two minutes from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. There are tracks that can handle nine trains running at once.
Conclusion
There isn’t a train service that runs directly from the city to the airport right now. Currently, passengers using the metro system to get to the airport must take the train to a neighboring stop, where they have to change to a bus that is vulnerable to traffic jams.
Passengers will eventually able to transfer straight from the metro to the train and go directly to any one of the three terminal stops thanks to the APM. Consequently, there would be no need to utilize the bus service on the congested road. In addition, passengers will able to take the train instead of waiting for company-specific buses to get to the rental car provider’s off-airport site thanks to the combined rental car facility.
The entire $5.5 billion transport and people-moving projects will be finished and operational in 2024, well ahead of the city’s 2028 Olympic Games hosting.
